XR Daily: Steam Frame Finally Has a Price
Steam Frame Is $1,059 and Ships as Early as September 18th
Valve opened reservations for Steam Frame on September 14th and finally put numbers on the hardware. The 256GB model is $1,059 (1,049 EUR, 889 GBP), the 1TB is $1,299 (1,279 EUR, 1,089 GBP). Reservations are not first come, first served: you sign up for your preferred model until September 17th at 10 AM PT, Valve runs a randomized lottery, and emails that evening tell you whether you are on the reservation list or the waitlist. First purchase emails go out September 18th, so the earliest units land at customer doors shortly after.
First-party accessories are separate: a PSU at $29, the Ergonomic Accessories Kit at $59 (controller hand straps, battery doors, headset top strap, extended light blocker), and the Accessory Replacement Kit at $49. The top strap is not in the box.
Two things stand out. The lottery is the Steam Machine playbook, a deliberate defense against resellers rather than a supply flex. And the price landed below what speculation predicted despite the ongoing RAM and storage shortage and Qualcomm’s chipset price hikes, which suggests Valve is absorbing margin to buy install base the way it did with Steam Deck.
The Spec Sheet: Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, 16GB, and an x86 Translation Layer
Against Quest 3, the architectural differences are sharper than the display numbers. Steam Frame runs a Snapdragon Series 8 Gen 3 (SM8650, 8-core, 4nm) with 16GB of unified LPDDR5, against Quest 3’s 6-core XR2 Gen 2 and 8GB. Panels are 2,160 x 2,160 per eye LCD at 72 to 120Hz, with an experimental 144Hz mode, versus Quest 3’s 2,064 x 2,208. Weight is 435g total, but only 190g sits in the front core, with a 21.6Wh battery in the rear headstrap, against 515g for Quest 3.
The deeper split is software and expansion. Frame runs SteamOS with an open bootloader, ships a microSD slot for up to 2TB, and exposes a user-accessible gen4 PCIe port that can drive two 2.5 Gbps cameras, which is the opposite of a sealed appliance. Its x86 compatibility layer lets the ARM chip run the flatscreen Steam library natively, the same trick Steam Deck uses, and Wi-Fi 7 dual-band streaming plus an included dongle skips the router hop that adds latency and jitter to Quest PC streaming.
The catch is passthrough: monochrome cameras, a Quest 2 era decision, with the color version sold as an add-on. For mixed reality work that is a real handicap, since depth and segmentation quality start with the camera feed. Valve is also openly pitching SteamOS beyond its own hardware, telling Road to VR the OS “would be great for other [VR] devices.”
Half-Life: Alyx Standalone Is Real, and Foveated Rendering Is Why
Valve confirmed it is building a standalone port of Half-Life: Alyx for Steam Frame, so no VR-ready PC is required. It will not be ready at launch: Valve says it is “intended to ship to customers soon,” and it may be bundled free the way it was with Valve Index.
The engineering detail is the interesting part. Valve calls eye tracking plus foveated rendering a “silver bullet” for the port, and says the headset’s 16GB of memory was critical because it let the team avoid changing assets or degrading gameplay. Even so, the work took over a year inside Vulkan drivers and SteamVR. Most of it was not Alyx specific, so it benefits every other title on the platform. Because no content was modified, existing Alyx Workshop items work automatically on the native build, and the Alyx optimizations carry over to the Windows PC version too.
Foveated rendering is what turns eye tracking from a comfort feature into a performance budget. Rendering high detail only at the fovea is the difference between a mobile chipset hitting frame time and not, and Steam Frame is now the clearest commercial example of that argument.
Great On Frame Launches With 70+ Verified Games
Valve opened a Great On Frame page, the Steam Deck’s Great On Deck label transplanted to VR, and the launch list already runs past 70 titles: Beat Saber, Pistol Whip, Superhot VR, Synth Riders, Walkabout Mini Golf, Job Simulator, the I Expect You To Die trilogy, Pavlov Shack, Iron Rebellion, Thumper, Real VR Fishing, and both Moss games. The list is expected to keep growing.
Certification is doing two jobs. For buyers it sets expectations, because the x86 translation layer means performance varies per title and most people cannot guess which games will hit frame time. For developers it is a visibility slot on a storefront page, the same incentive that got studios to chase Deck Verified. Valve is not blocking anything, so an unverified gray zone is guaranteed.
Seeing Moss and Moss II on the launch list the same week Polyarc announced it is shutting down is its own commentary: the certified catalog leans on studios that may not exist in five years.

Polyarc Closes After a Major Project Cancellation
Polyarc Games, the Seattle studio founded in 2015 by ex-Bungie developers, announced its closure in a LinkedIn post following the cancellation of a “major project” earlier this year. The studio spent most of its eleven years on the Moss series: Moss in 2018, Moss: Book II in 2022, Glassbreakers: Champions of Moss in 2025. In April it laid off two-thirds of staff after that cancellation. In July it tried a flat-screen pivot, releasing Moss: The Forgotten Relic on consoles and PC with Blackbird Interactive. The farewell post points to a reverse recruiting spreadsheet listing 29 employees.
Polyarc has not confirmed whether Meta’s Reality Labs pivot, which closed internal studios and pulled funding from in-progress projects, caused the collapse. It joins a consistent list: Sanzaru (Asgard’s Wrath), Armature (Resident Evil 4 VR), Twisted Pixel (Deadpool VR), Vertigo Games’ Amsterdam studio (Metro Awakening), and two nDreams studios.
Moss was a reference implementation for tracked-controller presence, a third-person game that sold VR by making you care about a character you could reach out and touch. When a studio with a signature IP, a decade of VR-only craft, and three shipped titles cannot fund its next project, the problem is the funding model for premium single-player VR, not demand.
Apple Cut Around 100 Vision Pro Roles and Shut Down Spatial Gaming
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple laid off around 100 people working on Vision Pro, “largely shutting down” the spatial gaming team and shrinking the immersive video team, with cuts also touching headset security, spatial audio engineering, spatial Siri integration, and visionOS itself. Apple’s statement acknowledges the change while pointing to new roles and internal transfers.
Apple executives told staff that Vision Pro hardware and visionOS are not going away, so read this as a content org contraction rather than a platform exit. The reasoning is not mysterious: the $250 PlayStation VR2 controller add-on saw little uptake, only a small number of VR games run natively on visionOS, and people do not use the headset for gaming. Immersive video got cut for the same economics, with each episode costing millions against a small owner base while third-party creators now shoot on Blackmagic’s immersive camera and finish in DaVinci Resolve.
The forward bet is a slimmer, lighter successor possibly in late 2028, which incoming CEO John Ternus is reportedly open to cancelling if the headset market has not gained traction by then. The primary wearable focus is screenless smart glasses aimed at Meta’s lineup next year. If you build immersive content, first-party capture is over and the tooling is yours to buy.

Kinesis Turns the Meta Neural Band Into a Mac Input Device
An open-source project called Kinesis hit 112 points on Hacker News for using the Meta Neural Band as a general purpose input device for macOS. The Swift 6 app requires macOS 14 and maps band gestures to actions: swipe between desktops, open Mission Control, control music, pinch plus turn for volume or brightness, all remappable with a practice mode in the menu bar. The author built it on earlier neural-band prototyping work and open-sourced both.
The significance is in the abstraction. A sEMG wristband reads muscle signals, needs no camera line of sight, and does not require lifting an arm, which makes it a candidate input layer for glasses-style devices where cameras cannot see your hands. Here it is driving a desktop instead of a headset, which is how an input channel accumulates a developer pool, a gesture vocabulary, and third-party tooling before it lands on a mass market wearable.
It also pairs with what Meta proved on Ray-Ban Display, where a thumb-to-index swipe scrolls Threads. Low bandwidth input works when the task is small, and system navigation is a small task.
