Quest 3 vs Steam Frame: Specs, Streaming, and Which to Buy
The short answer
Both are standalone headsets with pancake lenses, four tracking cameras, and no base stations. Almost nothing else about them is the same.
Quest 3 is a $599.99 mixed reality appliance. It runs Meta’s Horizon OS on Android, has full color passthrough with a depth projector, tracks your hands, and is tied to the Horizon Store’s catalog of more than 500 experiences.
Steam Frame is a $1,059 PC VR streaming device that happens to be standalone. It runs SteamOS 3 on Linux, carries a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 with 16GB of RAM, has eye tracking, and plugs straight into your Steam library through a Wi-Fi 6E dongle that comes in the box.
Pick Quest 3 if your VR life is standalone apps, mixed reality, and a smaller budget. Pick Steam Frame if most of your VR time happens in front of a gaming PC and you want the lightest thing on your face plus the most open platform.
To put it more plainly: Quest 3 optimizes for what the headset can do alone. Steam Frame optimizes for how well it can extend a PC.

- Weight: 515g for Quest 3, excluding the facial interface. Steam Frame’s front box is 185g (190g in Road to VR’s table) inside a 435 to 440g total package, with the 21.6Wh battery in the rear strap.
- Tracking: four outward facing cameras each. Steam Frame adds infrared illuminators so tracking works in a dark room.
- Eye tracking: none on Quest 3. Steam Frame has two internal cameras for eye tracking.
- Passthrough: two RGB cameras at 18 PPD plus a depth projector on Quest 3, versus monochrome passthrough on Steam Frame.
- Hand tracking: Quest 3 supports controller-free hand, arm, and torso tracking. Steam Frame requires an input device.
- PC VR: Quest 3 streams through your Wi-Fi router with Air Link, Steam Link, or Virtual Desktop, and Steam Link now offers wired USB-C streaming in public beta. Steam Frame uses a dedicated 6GHz Wi-Fi 6E dongle that connects the headset directly to the PC.
- Battery: 19.44Wh internal on Quest 3, rated for about 2.2 hours of average use. Steam Frame puts 21.6Wh in the rear headstrap.
Compute: where the two diverge most
The chips are the clearest split.
Quest 3’s XR2 Gen 2 uses the Adreno 740 GPU from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 generation, and Meta underclocks it for thermal headroom. Steam Frame’s 8 Gen 3 uses the newer Adreno 750. UploadVR puts the raw gap at roughly 25 percent, widening past 30 percent once Quest 3’s underclock is counted, and estimates around 50 percent better single-threaded CPU performance with roughly double the multi-threaded throughput.
That is a meaningful edge for standalone rendering. It is also not a match for a gaming PC. Valve calls Steam Frame’s chip a roughly 10 watt part originally designed for phones, which is exactly why the headset ships with a dongle and why Valve describes the product as streaming-first. The 16GB of memory matters more than the GPU gap for one specific reason: Valve says it is what let the standalone Half-Life: Alyx port avoid changing assets or degrading gameplay.
Wireless PC VR: router hop versus point to point
Quest 3’s PC VR path runs PC to router to headset. A clean Wi-Fi 6 or 6E network makes it work well, and a congested or distant router makes it stutter. Valve even lists Wi-Fi 6 or 6E plus a wired PC connection in its streaming requirements, so the quality of your network is part of the product.
Steam Frame removes the middle hop. The headset creates its own 6GHz Wi-Fi 6E hotspot and the included USB dongle connects your PC directly to it, which hands Valve firmware level control over the whole network path. Separate from that, the headset has its own Wi-Fi 7 radios for internet traffic. In hands-on testing, Road to VR called the streaming quality promising.
Both headsets rely on video encoding, so neither is a display cable. If you want the lowest possible latency on Quest 3, the wired USB-C streaming path in the Steam Link beta is the closest equivalent.
Passthrough and mixed reality
This is Quest 3’s win, and it is not close. Two RGB cameras at 18 PPD plus a depth projector give it a 4.5x improvement in passthrough resolution over Quest 2, in full color, with room mapping. Mixed reality apps that depend on understanding your furniture and walls start from that feed.
Steam Frame’s two front cameras are monochrome, blue tinted in the hands-on impressions, and lower resolution than dedicated MR cameras. The tradeoff is that the IR illuminators let it see in the dark. Color passthrough arrives through the Arcturus Vision Camera, a $149 add-on with dual 32MP Sony sensors that attaches to Steam Frame’s expansion port and Valve’s own listing describes as 5K HDR color passthrough with spatial video capture.
For mixed reality development, that means Quest 3 is the reference device and Steam Frame is a second target with a paid upgrade path.
Tracking and eye tracking
Both headsets do inside-out SLAM from four cameras, and neither supports base stations. Steam Frame’s controllers carry 18 IR LEDs each against 8 on the Touch Plus controllers, which should make them harder to occlude. They also split gamepad inputs across the pair, with A/B/X/Y on the right controller and a D-pad on the left, so one set of controllers covers both VR and flatscreen play. The tradeoff is no hand tracking at launch, which Quest 3 has had since 2023.
Eye tracking on Steam Frame is not a comfort gimmick. For PC VR it drives foveated streaming, encoding the video stream at higher resolution where you are looking. For standalone titles it enables eye-tracked foveated rendering, which Valve called a silver bullet for getting Half-Life: Alyx onto a mobile chip. Quest 3 has no eye tracking, so it stays on fixed foveated rendering, where the high detail region is fixed at the center of the display.
Refresh rates and what developers can actually use
Meta’s developer documentation is unusually blunt about the arithmetic. A 72Hz frame budget is 13.9ms, 90Hz is 11.1ms, 120Hz is 8.3ms, 207Hz drops to 4.8ms, and 240Hz leaves 4.2ms. Meta also warns that apps which cannot hold their requested rate will fail Horizon Store review, and that reaching 240Hz requires display scaling, which renders at lower resolution and upscales to the panel, visibly softening small text and thin geometry.
In practice, extended refresh rates suit light scenes that benefit from low latency and smooth motion: rhythm games, competitive shooters, racing and sports titles. A dense scene with heavy post-processing is a bad candidate. Both Meta’s own guidance and the developer response so far point the same way. Quest Games Optimizer and Virtual Desktop shipped 144Hz modes within days, and decoders become the bottleneck past that for streamed content.
Steam Frame’s ceiling is lower on paper: 120Hz standard, 144Hz experimental. Its performance argument is foveation rather than raw hertz.
What the box does not include
Quest 3 includes the headset, Touch Plus controllers with batteries and wrist straps, and an 18W power adapter.
Steam Frame includes the headset, controllers, and the wireless dongle, and Half-Life: Alyx on the same account if you do not already own it. It does not include a power supply, which Valve sells for $29, and it does not include a top strap. The top strap, controller hand straps, and an extended light blocker come in the $59 Ergonomic Accessories Kit. The standalone ARM build of Half-Life: Alyx is confirmed but will not be ready at launch.
Add the headset, the PSU, the ergonomic kit, and the color passthrough camera, and a Steam Frame setup reaches $1,296 before tax. The same accessories for Quest 3, including its $79.99 Link cable and a $69.99 Elite Strap, push that total to roughly $750.
Which one to buy
Buy Quest 3 if:
- You want mixed reality apps, room understanding, or color passthrough at all.
- Your library is mostly Horizon Store titles and Android based apps.
- Hand and controller-free interaction matters to you.
- $600 is the budget, or you want a headset that has had three years of OS iteration.
Buy Steam Frame if:
- Your VR time is mostly PC VR, and you want the network hop removed.
- You want your Steam library, including flatscreen games, on the headset itself.
- Eye-tracked foveated rendering and the lighter front weight matter more than passthrough quality.
- You want an open bootloader, microSD expansion, and a user accessible PCIe expansion port.
Caveats
Valve’s figures are Valve’s own, and the headset ships from September 2026 onward, so independent in-depth reviews of comfort and optics are still thin. The x86 translation layer means per title performance varies, which is the reason the Great On Frame verification list exists; it launched with more than 70 titles and keeps growing. Steam Frame’s Android support is also new, and its hand tracking is absent rather than a promised feature to wait for.
Quest 3’s numbers are stable and documented, but its extended refresh rates are a development playground more than a consumer feature, and most Horizon Store apps still target 72Hz or 90Hz.
